Yes, it is a great study and I was there when she was doing all the interviews. It was so intense (so many hours a day she would spend interviewing women individually and writing on her laptop) that she broke down and cried once just because of the emotional exhaustion and the sheer weight of listening to so MANY stories of hardship, abuse, despair, etc. It adds up to quite a bit.
If anybody is interested, the paper is in the 2002 June issue of The Journal of Contemporary Ethnography, and it is so far the best documented study (an ethnography, indeed) on women who exited the Cog.
