Growing up, we used to think of a cult as any group that didn't agree with Orthodoxy. I think that many of us have been conditioned to argue theology: from our upbringing and from our own experiences as adults (in the COG, or whatever sect it may have been.)
But you are right. Our belief system means NOTHING if we don't show respect to other people. It means NOTHING if we don't show love to those around us. It means NOTHING if it cause disfunctional relationships.
I think that you are absolutely right with your observations.
If a religion doesn't do good for its members and for others in this life, it probably wont do anyone any good in the next life either.
