Regarding the stigma of being gay and Catholic....
I've been under the impression that some gay men joined the Priesthood in the belief that if they were celibate, they would not be gay.
Of course, they then became sexually repressed gay men.
Gay and Lesbian Ministries have an office in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles. I set up a booth for them every year. The first year we did it, I asked them how they could exist in a Church that was so anti-gay in public policy. The reply, "We hate the sin, we love the sinner".
The idea is that the are supposed to repress their homosexual urges, and at some point God will make them hetrosexual.
That doesn't work with most gay people I know. bisexuals, maybe.. but died in the wool, had crushes on other little boys when six queens? I'd have to see it to believe it.
