That is a pretty good point. I took that into consideration when I took over the tech side of New Day News.
I've introduced a lot of improvements (new software, etc). But, I felt I had to keep it kind of the same as everything else. The reason being that I didn't want to drive off the user base by forcing them to learn a whole new user interface. For example, all of the reasonably busy boards are using a reverse chronological threaded listing format.
Excognet tried to introduce a more spreadsheet like format that you see on many of the more modern tech support boards, but people didn't seem to warm up to that. The thing that I thought hurt them the most, however, was the requirement that one register. This crowd holds the ability to remain anonymous very dear. Only one regular poster I know of uses legal first and last names, and his name is kind of lilke a brand name in this community.
It is entirely possible that I am underestimating the willingness of the community to experement with other styles.
In my opinion, the most professional looking ex-member board is run by Jules at www.exfamily.org. She is the only one who has been truly successful in drawing a number of SGA's, and perhaps the interface has something to do with it.
