I have read every one of these things back and forth and now I'll put in my two cents. I found there was absolutely nothing lovable or pitiable or victimized about Maria. I think Berg would have been nothing without her. I think in many ways, she created him and made him what he was. He fed into her fantasy, and she fed into his. It's very telling that Davidito hated her - his own mother. Who was always there with the tape recorder when Berg rambled? Who published all the letters and edited them and chose what went into them? I think she absolutely thrived on the lies he was telling us. I'm afraid I have no more sympathy for her than I have for bin Laden. To end on an amusing note, I went into labor at 9 p.m. on July 30th, 1987. I got to the little Thai place where I was to have the baby and there were two other women there (both locals) having babies. The mid wives were freaking out at all the activity. So they left me alone on my delivery table and obviously planned to deliver my baby in the wee hours of the morning. But I was ABSOLUTELY DETERMINED that I would not be celebrating my child's birthday on July 31st, THE "QUEEN'S" BIRTHDAY, so at one minute to midnight I pushed her out and the midwives almost killed me for not cooperating with them. I said, You better get in here or this baby will come out on the floor! They caught her just in time. I pushed on top of contractions, I pushed in between contractions, I pushed till I was BLUE. And her birthday was July 30th. And STILL IS!! Ha ha ha!
