I like your outlook on the past.
The other evening I was speaking with a friend. We were speaking of how people change and mature. Most of us, if not all of us, have really done some pretty dumb things in our lives. He said, "You know, that's why we really can't judge others, because we all change. We all mess up and grow out of destructive habits."
I'm learning to look back on my own life with different eyes. I used to moan and think "Oh, how stupid I was." But now I realize that I was just being human. Maybe a little more human than most, but human none-the-less. I appreciate the fact that I did learn a lot through my mistakes. Now I need to learn to be tolerant of others, and helpful...not judgmental.
But it's so hard to see someone making the same mistakes, and not take a stick to their head and say "What in the h**l do you think you're doing? Don't you realize that you're making a big mistake?"
Like you say, everyone has to go it alone. We can't be the Holy Spirit to other people. We can relay to them our own experiences (if appropriate), but every has to grow and experience life on their own.
