They have a huge church where I live, with thousands of members. I know Chuck Smith had a small church in the late 60s, and they began to minister to hippies. A lot of people turned their noses down to this church for doing this, but it turned into a super ministry. They grew because they were willing to adapt the faith to other lifestyles, like the hippy lifestyle. They also were willing to accept counter culture music, and allowed the hippies to write songs and perform in their church, and take an active part in the ministry.
The difference between the COG and Calvary Chapel is that Chuck Smith didn't claim to be an end-time prophet, and didn't lead his congregations into false doctrine and weird sexual stuff.
