I haven't found many physicists who are atheists and Einstein was drawn to the non-material world(morality, religion, spirituality). To understand him one must realize his context. He opposed quantum physics, which introduced the idea of uncertainty. Einstein was a deterministic physicist and couln'd envision "a God that played dice". He believed a God that played pool, one who allowed scientists to calculate exactly where each ball would be after the cue ball hit the group as long as all the variables were know. Quantum mechanics does not work that way.
