To answer your question . I work in the Canadian social services sector with children and families. 40 % of the client base I serve have been the victims of physical or sexual abuse, neglect and a number of other issues. In my job I frequently deal with situations before criminal and family courts. I am not a lawyer but most workers in my sector are required to be familiar with the legal issues surrounding abuse.
