Anything sensational makes for a good story by the media.
It seems to be a worldwide accepted opinion that the Japanese produce very intelligent people. My mother was under the impression that it's due to the educational system. But in reality it's due to the many after-school classes (jukku) that kids are sent to. I don't see how the educational system itself could be considered superior, with up to 40 or more kids in a class controlled by only one teacher, and almost no disciplinary standards. But somehow they manage to learn and progress. Like I said, I think it's in large part to after-school classes which take up almost all of a kid's time from about 8 years on.
