Jo, I didn't mean to come across as insensitive. Please see my post below about "What I Agree & Disagree with". I definitely did agree with the whole first part of fg's post. I thought it was insightful.
But part of what triggered my reaction, I have to confess, is the overall impression that comes across in the second half of his post that "we didn't know any better" and "it was the hippy era" and "we thought we were joining the peace corps." While for many FGs it's true to a degree that we were naive, the free love hippy era had something to do with it,we were brainwashed, etc. But at the time, real crimes happened that can't be explained away.
I'm not talking at this point about collective guilt for any FG who ever heard a letter from the Story of Davidito read, or any FG who tithed to support the cult. I'm not talking about parents who didn't up and grab their kids and leave. Collective guilt is a valid issue and a broad issue, but what I'm specifically referring to physical and sexual abuse and outright crimes that were committted in the cult environment.
I wholeheartedly acknowledge the suffering of FGs and lack of empowerment, and agree with many points that "fg" has made, but some statements were also made in his/her post that I strongly agree with, such as, "we were naive. That's what we're guilty of." A reading of the heartbreaking stories on MovingOn shows that our generation was guilty of some very serious things.
I guess my feeling is this really has all been discussed in detail before so maybe someone just needs to string all those posts into an article and post them?
To FG, I hope you read my post below, "What I agree and disagree with." I meant you no harm and forgive me for being so upset. I guess you missed all the past explanations and posts.
