You know, it reminds me a lot of the worst fundamentalism and bigotry I have seen even in the F. System school is bad so she had to be with the kids all day (In A GREYHOUND bus!) - finally when she became totally catatonic and would not even eat, he moved her to his mother's place where she tried to end her misery. AFTER all of this he gets her pregnant again (always with the belief that if she were 'of God' she would get 'healing' and be in the center of God's will.
ANd he gets upset with doctors, that he wants "better" drugs, give her a pill that works, in other words. The thing is, their WHOLE life was out of whack and consumed by the idea of an allegiance to the demands of a perfect God to be 'perfect' people.
Of course she thought she was Satan. Her own symptoms were not viewed as psychosis but as yielding to some bad spirit. I cannot even read about this stuff because it is so sick I can barely get close to it.
You know the rest. We will not see religious fanaticism on trial in TX -- only a woman who was too ill and too 'abused and misunderstood' by everyone around her to receive the adequate help she needed. (And that help would have meant first and foremost NOT TO HAVE ANY MORE kids since she had the first one)
