How I see it:
Mathematicians understand a whole lot,
theoretical physicists understand a lot,
experimental physicists sometimes understand,
philosophers try to understand,
the rest of us just try to try and try to understand, even successfully at times.
Just as your brother said, you will find that not many physicists would agree to indiscriminately expand onto other fields the findings of the physical sciences. Some people do but that doesn't make the implications correct.
