Hi Annoni! So glad that you are seeing a therapist. EMDR, from what I have recently read, is using rapid eye-movement to deal more quickly and efficiently with anxiety and painful memories, etc. It is being used alot with trauma survivors, PTSD,etc. There is a link at http://emdr.com and if this link does not come up, just type in emdr.com in your search and it should.
I have never talked to anyone that has used or is using it. But I will ask someone I know about it if you would like. And I want to ask YOU about it and how it helps YOU because it sounds like it is what your therapist will be using.
I think therapy is such a great help and I am glad that you found someone you trust. When people go into therapy and talk about painful memories, like from the family, it is not unusual that other painful memories from further back come up. When I first entered therapy, it was kind of like a puzzle. I had no clue what I was doing or where I was going with it. I think when the therapist asked me what I would like from it, I could just answer that I wanted to feel better. I did not even know how to label "anxiety" or "depression" or discuss a plan of treatment. That came after a few sessions to get to know each other and those plans change over time. I would love to hear about how EMDR helps you as I do not know anyone that has tried it personally.
But since it is supposed to be a newer and more helpful treatment for people with PTSD which certainly pertains to survivors of trauma in cults, it sounds great. Please keep me posted on it here? Thanks.
