I found this post on excog and friends. I hope they don't mind that I copied it here. I don't know who posted it, so I can't ask, but it's harmless enough. Anyway, I thought this was very interesting and would love to explore this phenomenon with others. I will be gone for a week, but when I come back, I'll check on here and see what is being discussed:
This is a well-documented syndrome about people mysteriously switching sides against their own. It was used to describe a hostage-taking incident in Stockholm in the 70s, but researchers have linked the Stockholm Syndrome to the behaviour of POWs, concentration camp inmates, battered spouses, cults members, sexual abuse victims, and more.

There's a lot more. Just do a search on yahoo. Tell me if you see any relationship with what is happening to (some exmembers) and the Stockholm syndrome. I do. Many of the parameters required to achieve that are right there.
