I ran into this road block again this weekend. All the women at the table I was talking to were not in agreement with me. All said that she had performed such a dastardly deed, even if she was crazy, it didn't matter. After all, all people who kill and do such things are crazy, they said, and they can't all be put in an institution. I found that idea to be such a limited vision.
Then they related this to a man who recently killed his children by lighting a barbecue in his house and most of them died in their sleep from the fumes and he almost died too. The idea was, there is no uproar over him, he's being blamed without any protests. I said, "Did he have a history of serious mental illness? Did he have people around him that failed him and encouraged him to have more children when he was obvioulsy unable to care for them?" The lady replied that she did not know. She sounded like the typical reader quoting what she read in the newspapers.
It appears to me the man was acting in typical jealous fashion. He and his wife are going through a divorce and he did not want to be split up or have his wife marry someone else and take the children. You know, the "If I can't have them, no one can" attitude we see so often. This is just pure selfishness. I don't see how this is the same thing or can be related in the same manner as the Yates crime. Yet people are using it to relate to.
